The Global Stewardship Program is pleased to announce that the 2003 Seminar will be held in Havana, Cuba (June 11th-19th, 2003 tentative).  Applications are due October 14th.

The 2003 Program: "Contemporary Cuba"

In consultation with the Provost the Global Stewardship advisory committee will select six to nine W&L faculty members to participate.  The participants will receive funding to cover travel, lodging, most meals, and other program fees.  Participants will be responsible for personal expenses.

The on-campus seminar, led by Prof. Barnett, will meet once a month from November to May and will follow a reading list of materials from across the disciplines.  The seminar will culminate in a nine day site visit to Cuba in the early summer.

Seven of the nine days will be spent in Havana where members will have the opportunity to engage with scholars from a variety of fields as well as visit pertinent sites, such as Havana vieja, Vedado, el Museo de la revolución, etc.  The other two days will be spent in the Viñales valley where we hope to visit a maternity shelter, local farm, and so forth..  Tentatively we've arranged to have lectures on the following topics:

  • Cuba's Political System

  • 100 Years of US Cuba  Relations

  • Cuban Ecology and Environment
