The Program for Education in Global Stewardship

International Faculty Development Seminar 2004:

2005 Application  /  Overview of Seminar Program /

In an on-going effort to provide greater international opportunities to faculty, two years ago we established the Global Stewardship Faculty Development Seminar.  Faculty from various disciplines were invited to participate in the 2003 Seminar in Cuba and the 2004 Seminar in Denmark/Italy.

This year we have envisioned a new strategy which offers many advantages.   Rather than one single seminar, faculty may choose from a variety of topics and locales offered by the Council on International Educational Exchange.  Seminars will take place in Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, China, Hungary, the Czech Republic, India, Italy, Jordan, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and Vietnam.

This model should allow you to tailor the seminar experience to your professional needs even further while still allowing us to foster a sense of camaraderie among faculty through shared international experiences.

Criteria:

After receiving applications, we will then identify three or more seminars that coincide with our institutional aims and faculty interest.  In making our selection of both the seminar topics and the participants, preference will be given in instances where three or more faculty have chosen the same seminar.

Faculty will apply individually and not as a collaborative group; however, the committee will look favorably on applications that cite other colleagues who are applying for the same seminar.

Goals:

Our chief aim of the seminar experience is to provide faculty with the opportunity to have more direct exposure to foreign settings so as to energize our global learning across the campus.

  • By taking advantage of the many CIEE seminars, we can still achieve one of the main goals of the program, which was to establish a greater sense of shared experiences and international interests since three or more of you will attend the same seminar.

  • Furthermore, the CIEE seminar model will also allow you to form new relationships with fellow colleagues from other institutions as well.

  • Finally, the CIEE seminars will aptly fulfill our goal of professional development through their outstanding lectures, site visits, and contacts intended to strengthen one’s research and curricular goals.

Note: The seminars established by CIEE represent a broad range of locales and topics.  However, if there is a Faculty Development Seminar that is more appropriate for your discipline or professional needs, applicants are welcome to substitute it for one of the CIEE possibilities and then follow the same procedures described below.  In such instances, applicants should provide substantial documentation about the seminar, and notify Prof. Barnett as early as possible to verify the appropriateness of the substitution.

Procedure and Calendar:

1.      Go to the CIEE webpage and learn more about the available seminars (locale and topic) and their respective dates

2.      Submit W&L application by November 10th.   See application details below.

3.      Applicants should list a first choice and, when appropriate, a second as well.

4.      Applicants should also acknowledge if they aware of other colleagues who are applying for the same seminar. (Our goal is to send groups more so than individuals.)

5.      Applicants will be notified by December 1 regarding W&L funding.  We will likely fund a total of 12 participants, (for example, 4 faculty per seminar if we select 3 seminars.)  Due to unforeseen circumstances that can occur when dealing with international travel, the committee will reserve the right to name alternates as need be.

6.      Individuals will apply directly to CIEE in December (or other date as specified by CIEE) with notification in mid-winter

7.      Seminars typically take place some time in June

8.      Upon return to campus, participants will be expected to participate in an on-campus discussion of their seminar at an event to be named during the 2005-06 year.

Other considerations:

  • All undergraduate faculty are eligible.

  • Global Stewardship will provide funding to cover transportation and Program Fee.  Program Fees include lodging, and typically some meals. Applicants will be responsible for costs not covered in the Program Fee and Transportation.

  • Although participants are selected by the Global Stewardship Program, all final awards are subject to space availability and  CIEE’s  acceptance of an applicant.  (A pledge of funding by Global Stewardship does not mean that one has been admitted to a given seminar by CIEE. It simply means that we will fund you if accepted.)

Application Details

The Application is available by downloading the Word Document.  The application and  the two page statement of purpose should be returned to Jeff Barnett, Director of Global Stewardship, as email attachments
