The Program for Education in Global Stewardship

Senior Global Research Grants

Awards / Eligibility / Expectations /  Deadline / Application

In addition to internship funding, the Global Stewardship Program also provides competitive funding for seniors to undertake research abroad necessary for the completion of the student’s capstone experience (INTER 331), Honors thesis, or other senior directed study.  In special circumstances it may also facilitate the presentation of senior research at international meetings or other venues.

Awards:      to top

  • The amount of funding is usually restricted to $1,500 maximum for Senior Honors thesis and $500 travel reimbursement for international travel for other student research.  In most cases, the amount funded will be a portion of that requested and the recipient will be expected to contribute or acquire the remainder.

  • Funds are intended only to defray expenses for international travel (transportation, housing, meals, etc.)  Any unused portion must be returned.

  • In consultation with the Provost, the Global Stewardship advisory committee reviews applications and grants awards.

Eligibility:

All undergraduate students are eligible but special consideration is given to those in the program.  As such, first priority will be given to students who propose to conduct research abroad for the Global Stewardship capstone seminar (INTER 331), followed by those who will undertake research for the Senior Honors' Thesis, followed by those who seek to carry out other Senior projects, and finally those who will present Senior Research abroad.

Expectations:

Recipients must submit a two-page (minimum) written report to the Global Stewardship Director no later than six weeks upon returning to campus.  The report should summarize the activities undertaken and address the benefits received.  The report will be incorporated into the annual statement to the Johnson Foundation and may be published in The W&L Passport.  An itemized budget should be attached to the report, detailing use of funds along with expense vouchers, including required receipts (expenses over $25.00).  Any unused portion of funds must be returned.

Recipients are also expected to offer an informal discussion of their experience with fellow students.  Such discussions would typically take place as class visitation, student panels for International Education, etc.,

Deadline:

Applications are due in early May.  The 2003 date is: May 12th.
