The Program for Education in Global Stewardship

International Faculty Development Seminars

General Overview  /  Dates and Selection Procedures  /  Expectations / Application2003-04 Seminar in Havana, Cuba / 2004-05 Seminar: Immigration and Identity in the European Context / 2005 Seminar

Overview:

The international faculty development seminars seek to highlight a particular country or region in the world or a specific global theme.  As such, they are intended to foster knowledge of the area or subject while also offering an exploration of issues that may extend beyond an individual culture.

Typically seminars are yearlong programs with regular meetings during the academic year.  In most cases six to nine W&L faculty are invited to join the seminar, led by a coordinator recruited from our own faculty or from another institution.  The seminar coordinator will provide a reading list for the group, moderate discussions during the yearlong program, and may be asked to identify scholars to be invited to campus.  The seminar usually culminates in a site visit by the participants, who are then asked to evaluate how the experience can be applied to their teaching.

The subject of the seminars is developed on a yearly basis, at least one year prior to their inception.

Dates and Selection Procedures: (note procedures have been been modified for 2005.  See 2005 seminar)

  • After receiving applications from the faculty in September, the Global Stewardship Advisory committee recommends participants to the Provost.  Priority is given to those on whom the seminar will have the greatest impact in terms of curricular development and research initiatives.
  • Participants are contacted by the Global Stewardship Director in middle of the fall term and are expected to begin the yearlong program in early November or December
  • Next year’s seminar topic/locale will be announced on this page sometime in late spring

Expectations of the Faculty participants:

  • Attend monthly meetings for the on-campus portion of the seminar (usually from November through April) and follow the planned readings.
  • Attend the pre-departure orientation.
  • Evaluate how the experience can be applied to your teaching.

Application:

  • Additionally, submit a two-page statement of purpose describing your teaching and research interests.  Describe your objectives by outlining how you expect to benefit professionally from participation in the seminar.  Note any previous experience in the host country.
